2017 is here and so is our first Beard of the Month this year! Here at Mo Bro’s we love big beards and we love music, that’s why we were excited to meet Rob Ellis, a guitar and bass player from a band called Super73. If you’ve never heard of them before, it’s a Leicester based alternative rock band. Super73 has four members and the current line up has been around for just a year, but Rob is happy to say that it’s the best line up he’s ever had. He shared his experience and thoughts about the the band, so if you love rock music, keep on reading!

How did Super73 come together?

We used to play in two different bands based in Leicester, but we’ve known each other for years. It happened that both of our bands split up around the same time and we decided to come together. There are four members in Super73 now – two guitarists, a keyboard player and a drummer.

When did you start playing music?

It’s been a while now (laughs). I started playing the guitar around 20 years ago when I was 17 and I can play the bass as well. Before I joined the Super73, I was a member of a band called Citizen Smith.

What makes Super73 stand out?

I believe that we have a unique music writing style. Every member in Super73 has a different music taste, but it all seems to come together perfectly when we write music together. That’s why our songs stands out and we always sound like us, since we are not similar to any other bands.

Also, apart from our lead singer Mark, our drummer Andy sings lead vocals as well.  We like to dress up quite smart on the stage, which is different to what we sound like.

How many songs do you have so far?

You can find a 5 track EP on Spotify, but we have about 15 different songs in total.

We love music, it’s always on our minds, so we constantly keep writing new songs. I’m happy to announce that we’ll be releasing a new single in April.

Which is your most popular song?

A song called ”There, or Thereabouts” which was quite popular a while ago, we have a video for it on Youtube. However, when we talk to people after the live shows, a song called ”Monkey See Monkey Do” gets the most reactions. It’s a new song that’s going to be released along with the video in April.

People tend to like the new song, because it’s quite dynamic. It goes from quiet to loud and it’s almost like 4 songs in one. We’re not traditional song writers, so ”Monkey See Monkey Do” is a quite unique track.

What are the biggest events that you have performed in so far?

We’ve played in some good venues like  O2 academies around the country and festivals as well and we’re building little fan bases up here and there.

Are you all focusing full time on music?

No, unfortunately not. We all have other jobs, for example, I work as a graphic designer when I’m not focusing on music.

I think that the internet has changed the music industry a lot. It’s getting harder and harder to get noticed. We enjoy playing as a band and we love doing it, to us anything else is a bonus. It is tough at the minute, but we practice two times a week.

How long have you been growing a beard for and why?

I’ve been growing mine for 5 years now, because I just simply hate shaving and I don’t like to be clean shaven. I’ve always had a stubble or a beard to a small degree, but then about 5 years ago it got to winter and I decided that I’m just going to let it grow. I really liked it after and I decided to never shave again.

The beard has become a part of me and a part of my personality. Even in the band I’m called the beard (laughs). I don’t think that I could ever go clean-shaven now.

What beard grooming products do you use?

I started using beard oil a couple of years ago to keep my beard moisturised. Now I use beard balm more often, because it keeps it in shape.
